Browns’ Offensive Woes Raise Concerns Amidst Penalty and Drop Issues

The Cleveland Browns are in the midst of a growing crisis as their offensive woes truly reached a fever pitch this season. Wide receiver Jerry Jeudy camped out at the Pro Bowl, star making appearances last year. Now, though, he’s in the eye of the storm. He leads the entire squad with five dropped passes. This adds his total to a mind-blowing 13 drops, which is now the most in the entire NFL. As the team prepares for their upcoming Week 7 home game against the Miami Dolphins, head coach Kevin Stefanski emphasizes the need for improvement across various facets of their offensive strategy.

The Browns have been marred by a plague of dropped passes. On the flip side, they rank dead last in the league in scoring, averaging a paltry 13.67 points per game. In their previous matchup, they mustered a mere nine points. That would be the least amount of offense he’s produced all season. Cleveland also leads the league in dead last with 32 offensive penalties this season, third most in the NFL. These obstacles are only causing greater difficulties for them to find a flow on the turf.

Cleveland’s pass attack has been a mess all year. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel is just 57.3% on his passes thrown with an 18.8% off-target rate, the fifth-highest in the NFL. This toxic mix of missed opportunities, penalties, and bad passes has hamstrked their ability to find/create explosive plays. The Pirates have only managed to generate 22 explosive passing plays all year, ranking dead last in the AAC and second to last in all of college football.

Despite these obstacles, a number of newcomers have emerged atop ESPN’s total receiving yards index. Some of the more prominent names are Cedric Tillman, Isaiah Bond, David Njoku and Harold Fannin Jr. Their contributions haven’t yet made much of an impact in translating into significant offensive production.

Stefanski addressed the pressing need for improvement in a recent statement:

“But I want to stress that we have to get better in so many areas and that includes coaching, that includes how we teach our guys, how we put them in different formations, the ways you run the ball, ways you pass the ball. All the above.” – Kevin Stefanski

He acknowledged the current state of the offense and stressed the importance of addressing these issues:

“We got to get it fixed because before you start winning, you’ve got to stop losing. And we’re doing some things right now that are preventing us from winning. We’ll get it fixed.” – Kevin Stefanski

As they get ready to host Miami, Stefanski returning to calling plays in a bid to re-ignite a sputtering offense will be one of the focal points. He noted that finding ways to be explosive is critical:

“We have to find ways to be explosive on offense, and that can come via the run or the pass and explosive pass can happen in a variety of different ways.” – Kevin Stefanski
