Browns Eye Stability at Quarterback with Flacco Signing

In some ways, the Cleveland Browns’ acquisition of Deshaun Watson was their most brazen attempt to cement their quarterback position. They re-signed veteran Joe Flacco to a one-year contract that would guarantee $4 million, potentially ballooning to $13 million with incentives. That means the team is in for a painful offseason. They took this step only after finding out Deshaun Watson would likely miss the majority of the 2025 season with an achilles tear. The Browns, who finished last season with a disappointing 3-14 record, are eager to rebound and compete effectively in the upcoming year.

Even given the ambiguity of their current quarterback situation, the Browns have not opened up about any plans they may have for the future. Now, they find themselves with the second overall pick in next spring’s draft. That gives them the opportunity to choose what most people agree is the top overall prospect on the board. Among the speculation is Ole Miss’s Jaxson Dart, Alabama’s Jalen Milroe and Louisville’s Tyler Shough — all three of whom visited the Dolphins — are potential rookie quarterbacks. For his part, Flacco has probably given the Browns a decent low-risk, short-term fix.

Even Jimmy Haslam, the owner of the Browns, understands that having a franchise quarterback is a necessity. He underscores the importance of proceeding carefully.

“It would be great if we could get ‘the quarterback,’ but we’re not going to force it,” – Jimmy Haslam

This signing is indicative of the overall Browns strategy as they look to build leadership and guidance within their flock of burgeoning young talent. Flacco did lead the Baltimore Ravens to a Super Bowl victory—and he was named the game’s MVP. He brings great comfort level with stretch zone schemes comparable to what head coach Kevin Stefanski employed during his first four seasons. Flacco’s extensive experience would certainly benefit his ability to plug right into the offense. It could even help ease the transition when Watson is out of the picture.

Beyond Flacco’s signing, the Browns have entered a stormy offseason with player exits and injuries taking center stage. Jameis Winston was a disaster last season, tossing eight picks in three games before departing as a free agent. Enter Joe Flacco, who’ll be primed to step in and fill that void. With a veteran such as Flacco, it gives the Browns comfort. He’s a professional, steady hand at the controls who will get the best out of an offense searching for answers as they head toward draft season.

The Browns’ decision to host top quarterback prospects during their top-30 visits indicates their interest in bolstering their roster further. Acquiring Flacco allows the team to have more choices. They are no longer forced to look at taking a quarterback early in the draft under duress. Kenny Pickett is considered by many as the favorite to win that competition and claim the starting position. In 2021, he’ll finally have the opportunity to show that on-field success.

In fact, Cleveland is importing Flacco to stoke a deeper fire of competition. They are intent on showing that they’ve turned things around after a disastrous performance last year. The team’s ownership and management is interested in achieving playoff success again. They are sure that finding a great veteran presence to save this locker room will do just that.

Flacco’s familiarity with various offensive schemes and his proven track record may serve as an asset during this transitional phase for the Browns. His experience and maturity can set the example for younger, brighter stars. He can help provide a sense of confidence while they try to restore the team’s reputation.

With the draft fast approaching, Cleveland is in position to make some calculated moves that will define their near future. They will access their individual needs and opportunities. Depending on that evaluation, they’ll know if they should plan to draft their own rookie QB or proceed with Flacco and Pickett.
