Cleveland Browns cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. tore his Achilles in practice. To wit, he will now miss all of the 2025 season as well. The mishap happened in a completely non-contact environment as Emerson was shadowing wideout Diontae Johnson down a go route. He was carted off the field, leaving his teammates and coaching staff to react instantly with fear and worry.
Emerson, a third-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, turned into an important cog in the Browns’ D. Over his career, he has played in 50 games with 33 starts, recording 202 tackles, four interceptions, and 34 pass breakups. His huge impact on the field makes him a critical player for his team. This is increasingly significant as he heads into the final year of his rookie contract.
Coach Kevin Stefanski shared his disappointment about Emerson’s injury, recognizing the toll it takes on the player and the team.
“Disappointed. Obviously, injuries are the worst part about our game, but he will bounce back,”
- Kevin Stefanski
With Emerson out, fellow cornerback Greg Newsome II will take over that role in base defense. Usually operating as the team’s nickel corner, Newsome has demonstrated this year that he has the versatility and talent to be entrusted with this new duty. He will be paired with Denzel Ward, a new 2024 Pro Bowler across the team’s backfield to round out the squad’s menacing defensive core.
The Browns are reeling from Emerson’s injury. They will now have to work to determine who can step into the variety of nickel packages that Emerson would typically handle. The coaching staff is evaluating potential candidates to ensure that the defense remains competitive throughout the season.
Stefanski emphasized his faith in Emerson’s bounce back ability and his teammates’ confidence in him.
“I know what he’s made of, and I know he’s got our support. He’s got his teammates’ support.”
- Kevin Stefanski
The unexpected loss of Martin Emerson Jr. to start the season puts the Browns in a tough spot as they look ahead to Week 1 and beyond. They might have the most overall talent on their roster. The players have taken the initiative to be at the front and drive the charge to respond to this blow, making sure they continue to be among the best in league.
