Bronny James Shows Promise Despite Lakers Loss to Suns

In his much-anticipated debut, Bronny James scored eight points in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 103-81 loss to the Phoenix Suns on Friday night. The match became an important step for the 20-year-old, the son of NBA superstar LeBron James. He did not just enter the league as a rookie, but he joined his father on the court to make history.

Against the Spurs, Bronny James made his debut logging almost 23 minutes of playtime and being included in the Lakers’ first substitution group. His shooting game was tough, shooting a mere 1-for-12 from the field. His overall efforts had a lot of potential, especially on the defensive end. Coach JJ Redick noted that Bronny’s progress is evident, stating, “He is so much more comfortable and confident as a player.”

Even when Bronny couldn’t get his shooting rhythm on a deep three-point attempt, he was still focused on the defensive end. Combined with his relentless pursuit of the ball on the defensive end, his ceiling is sky-high. Redick still thought he could be a difference-making defender on that end.

“I felt like they were pretty good shots,” Bronny said, reflecting on his shooting struggles.

He admitted that he wasn’t as confident on his feet as he would like to be. Even though he missed a few deep chances, too—he made some aggressive long passes—he felt good that he really challenged and threatened most of the goal-takes.

“Not rushed, not forcing anything. Didn’t have my legs under me as much as I wanted to, so a lot of them were short, but most of them were on line. I felt like I could have made those. I felt like I took some good shots,” he added.

Bronny’s lights-out shot took place late in the third quarter. It turned out to be a signature highlight play during a disappointing night for him and the Lakers. After five years in the system, now he gets his shot, just days before he turns 21 on Monday. This milestone opens up a new chapter in his life, personally and professionally.

As he continues to adapt to the demands of professional basketball, Bronny expressed his determination to take advantage of the opportunities presented to him. Player safety aside, star LeBron James and new star player Luka Doncic are very likely to miss the next game. This presents an incredible chance for Bronny to bring his dynamic talents to the hardwood floor!

“I’m just trying to feel it out, trying to get some reps in with the guys,” he stated, emphasizing his focus on gaining experience.

Over the course of his rookie season, Bronny played in 27 games for the Los Angeles Lakers. Each outing gives him more terrific experience as he continues his quest to solidify himself in the NBA.
