Denver Broncos tight end Evan Engram out with back injury. He will not be participating in this coming Sunday’s matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers, either. Frankly, nobody expected the team to announce this big of a surprise on Friday. This development deals a blow to Engram, who signed with them earlier this year on a two-year, $23 million deal. He just experienced a major defeat. This injury comes on the heels of a calf injury that he suffered during the second half of Denver’s Week 1 win over the Tennessee Titans.
In 2023, Head Coach Sean Payton made it clear how vital Engram’s position would be in the Jaguars’ offensive gameplan. He stated, “Certainly Evan Engram is going to play a big role for us.” A lack of injury luck has derailed the Broncos’ ability to use him to his utmost potential as a centerpiece of their game plan. Engram has been targeted all of 11 times this season. He compiled 4 catches for 33 yards on 6 targets in the two games that he was able to suit up.
Engram’s absence will certainly sting the Jaguars, as they hope to continue their recent momentum to an improved season. His injury blueprint would be cause for serious alarm. He sat out of the entirety of the preseason and is currently missing a full 4 weeks (so far) to begin the regular season. The Broncos were counting on Engram to be the missing piece to their offensive puzzle. His struggles to remain on the field have caused them to look elsewhere.
While Engram’s condition has been confirmed, other players’ statuses remain uncertain. The team has given no updates on other injuries that have heavily impacted their roster, making their Week 3 preparations even more difficult.
