The Denver Broncos are on a quest to enhance their offensive lineup by adding a dynamic "joker" to support their young quarterback, Bo Nix. A "joker" in football terminology refers to a versatile running back or tight end capable of moving around the formation and creating challenging matchups for the opposition. Head coach Sean Payton, renowned for deploying such players in his past successful teams, is keen to incorporate a "joker" into the Broncos' strategy. This player could be a game-changer, providing mismatches and additional options for Nix.
Payton's commitment to finding this crucial piece of the puzzle was evident during the recent NFL Combine, where the Broncos engaged in face-to-face discussions with several high-profile tight ends. Michigan's Colston Loveland emerged as a potential candidate for the "joker" role, although he is not the only prospect under consideration. The Broncos are also exploring the draft to rejuvenate their running back room, with players such as North Carolina's Omarion Hampton, Tennessee's Dylan Sampson, and Georgia's Trevor Etienne offering intriguing possibilities in the early rounds.
"Obviously, with a young quarterback in place, it's a little clearer than it was this time last year," said coach Sean Payton.
Adding a "joker" to the team is not only about filling a role but also about enhancing Bo Nix's development. The Broncos did not have a tight end ranking in the top 200 for yards-after-catch in 2024, highlighting the need for an impactful addition. Payton emphasized the importance of finding players who can aid Nix's development and contribute significantly to the team's performance.
"The running back and tight end could obviously help in [Nix's] development," remarked Payton.
The Broncos' strategy goes beyond merely addressing offensive needs. The team must maintain a comprehensive view, especially with the upcoming draft. The defensive line is another area that may see early focus, particularly with defensive tackle D.J. Jones entering free agency. Payton stressed the necessity of selecting the best available player to elevate the team's overall capabilities.
"And then I would also say a really good elite pass rusher would help in his development and a really good cover corner. I'm only saying that, meaning the best player that helps the team get better is going to help in his development," Payton noted.
For Denver, having a young, homegrown quarterback like Bo Nix provides a unique opportunity to build a solid foundation. With Nix as a reliable cornerstone, the Broncos are optimistic about their future prospects. This marks the first time since the introduction of the salary cap in 1994 that the Broncos feel confident about constructing their roster around their quarterback.
General Manager George Paton acknowledged the challenge of finding the ideal "joker," humorously comparing it to an elusive quest.
"It's kind of like the Loch Ness Monster of trying to find a 'joker,'" stated Paton.
Despite these challenges, Coach Payton remains focused on improving the team without resting on past achievements. He cautioned against complacency and emphasized starting anew each season.
"The one thing we have to avoid is this idea that we are going to pick up where we left off. I don't like that because our league has shown that the season ends, and you take the proverbial game board, you take all the pieces and dump them and you start again," said Payton.
