Michael Wilhoite, the Broncos' outside linebackers coach and former NFL player, faces a felony assault charge following an altercation at Denver International Airport. The incident occurred on Sunday when Wilhoite allegedly punched a police officer in the face, causing the officer to fall to the ground. This confrontation took a turn when the officer deployed his taser, striking Wilhoite in his left hip and side. Despite being tased, Wilhoite managed to drive away from the scene.
The officer involved in the altercation reported jaw pain and sustained "visible injuries" on his knees as a result of the incident. Wilhoite was subsequently arrested and booked into Denver jail, initially held without bond. On Monday, his bond was set at $5,000, and he appeared in court for a hearing. Wilhoite now faces a charge of second-degree assault of a peace officer.
The Broncos have acknowledged the situation surrounding Wilhoite's arrest, stating that they are in the process of gathering more information. This incident comes as Wilhoite is in his first year with the Broncos' coaching staff, having joined in 2023. Prior to his coaching role, Wilhoite played linebacker in the NFL for six seasons, accumulating 298 tackles and four interceptions over 79 games with the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks.
During the court proceedings, Magistrate Arnie Beckman remarked on the nature of the incident at the airport:
