These two principles were put to the test recently, when Brommapojkarna received a huge unexpected windfall with the sale of 17-year-old midfielder Love Arrhov to Eintracht Frankfurt. With a $70 million luxury tax hit, this deal is a new club record by $10 million! The sale fee was said to potentially rise into the eight figures in euros depending on the player’s performance-related milestones.
This financial boon highlights exactly why Brommapojkarna has found success in creating a monopoly on young talent throughout the greater Stockholm area. Players such as Arrhov should be the first of many to show what kind of talent the academy is producing. Numerous others have gotten pro deals with big league clubs.
Berglund knows these types of sales are critical if the club wants to remain sustainable long-term. He stated, “It’s really important for the club that when we sell someone, we don’t use all that money to buy older first-team players. Instead, we reinvest in the whole club and the grassroots.” This reinvestment strategy will help to deepen the changes made to the academy in order to keep Rensselaer in its position of producing this top-level talent.
Brommapojkarna has had a long tradition of developing talented footballers, including the likes of Viktor Gyökeres, Dejan Kulusevski, and Emil Bergvall. If these graduates become successful, Brommapojkarna will be the one to benefit from their future successes. It’s their 20 percent financing on a sell-on clause for players sold to other clubs.

“We never want a family to not be able to afford to be here,” Berglund asserted. “It’s really important to us that everybody who wants to play football can play football.” Brommapojkarna is committed to fostering a safe, welcoming space to all people. We couldn’t ask for more, because they know that every child deserves the chance to follow their dreams.
The academy’s structure allows teams to operate with their own bank accounts, providing them with autonomy regarding participation in additional tournaments or events. Berglund remarked, “All our teams have their own bank accounts, so if they want to go to extra tournaments or things like that, they need to find sponsors to pay.”
This community-based model develops accountability in these young athletes and challenges them to pursue necessary resources within their community.
Striving for Excellence
As of this writing, Brommapojkarna sits in ninth place in Sweden’s top-level league, Allsvenskan. Yet, their chief aim extends far beyond simply finding short-term success on the pitch. That is why fostering the club’s mission of developing young players has been at the top of Will’s list. Berglund stated, “Of course, we want to improve our first team and finish as high in the table as possible, but that’s not the main purpose.” As he iterated, their primary goal lies in developing young players with the aim of providing them experience at the highest level. This, in turn, will boost their economic valuation on the market.
With the club’s initial growing pains proving at times too much, it looked like death might be just around the corner. Berglund remembered days when earning a point in their division was an uphill battle. “Compare that to us at the time, we were having to fight for every game, to get the points in order to stay in the division, so the conditions were not ideal for young players to really shine.”
Today, Brommapojkarna turns this past development into a positive, vibrant channel for youth. From Allsvenskan to leagues abroad or even the national side, they can play and fulfill their aspirations to be the best.
Patrik Brenning emphasized this aspiration: “The idea is that it can help their kids fulfill their dream of playing in Allsvenskan, the Premier League or for the Swedish national team.” He cautioned about the realities of such ambitions, stating that “the reality is that so few of them will,” raising important questions about the fairness of promoting dreams that may be unattainable for many.
