Just ask Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers quarterback, who recently signed a $260 million five-year contract extension. The agreement is for $265 million and makes him the highest-paid player in the franchise’s history. The deal includes an eye-popping $181 million in fully guaranteed money, setting a new franchise precedent for both Purdy and the 49ers. It begins with a complete no-trade clause, the first ever given by the team. This contract extension now has Purdy under contract with the team through the 2030 season. His annual average salary of $53 million now sits as the seventh highest in the NFL, currently tying him with Jared Goff.
Purdy’s new contract represents nearly 19% of the 49ers’ salary cap in terms of average value. The extension reflects not only Purdy’s rising status within the organization but the team’s commitment to building a competitive roster around him. Contract talks started at the end of last season. Purdy was reportedly optimistic that a deal could be struck ahead of the start of the offseason training program in late-April.
The quarterback finalized the contract extension 28 days after the offseason program commenced, just ahead of on-field organized team activities. This timing proved critical for the organization. In addition to Bosa, other important players such as George Kittle and Fred Warner are looking for contract extensions.
Purdy’s negotiations lessons negotiators ain’t just about getting the biggest bucks. More importantly, he said he wanted to make sure that the 49ers could keep building a great team around him.
“However they use the cap space and all that kind of stuff, that’s not my job. My job is to now go and win games and lead this team, but I’m extremely happy and grateful for where we ended.” – Brock Purdy
Even after dealing with the lingering effects of a former elbow injury and shoulder injury outlook, Purdy came out claiming he is “fully healthy” and “100%.” His resilience is what has made his career. Everything began when he was chosen as the final choice in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Purdy’s contract extension adds tremendous stability to the 49ers franchise at such an important position. It gives them the opportunity to negotiate in good faith with the best players on their current roster. It is the quarterback’s relentless focus on team and winning that strikes the deepest chord within the organization.
“We want to make sure that we’re working together with our organization and setting up everybody for success,” – Brock Purdy
In light of his new financial security, Purdy and his wife have begun exploring potential purchases, including leisure items such as a bass boat. In light of our series Connecting in Place, the couple shares their hopes for the future as they create a life together in San Francisco.
Reflecting on his journey within the league, Purdy expressed gratitude for his current situation and shared his ambition to improve his performance moving forward.
“It’s just been where God has had me and I’ve been all-in on it and extremely grateful to be in this position. And it fires me up more than anything to want to continue to get better and help this organization win.” – Brock Purdy
Purdy’s deal is a testament to his loyalty towards the franchise and establishes a new precedent for quarterbacks around the league. As he prepares to lead the 49ers into the upcoming season, both he and the organization remain focused on achieving success on the field while navigating future challenges associated with roster management.
