Brock Purdy Returns to Practice Amid Ongoing Recovery

49ers Brock Purdy took a significant step in his recovery from a lingering toe injury. He was back on the San Francisco 49ers practice field by Wednesday. It’s been a slow process, as the signal-caller aggravated the injury in Week 4. Purdy’s injury came in a Week 1 win over the Seattle Seahawks. His toe injury continues to limit his ability to practice as he goes through the rehabilitation process.

Even with all that good progress, Purdy will be limited in practice this week. Specifically, head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated that the all-important recovery process would be about three months. While he’s optimistic about Purdy’s recovery, he reiterated that it is too soon to establish a specific timetable for the quarterback’s return.

“Injuries frustrate people, but Brock is handling it right like he does everything. I know he’s itching to get back.” – Kyle Shanahan

While Purdy concentrates on his rehab, the rest of the team is not immune to injury-related adversity. Linebacker Fred Warner had surgery on Tuesday to repair a dislocated and fractured right ankle. On the positive side, tight end George Kittle has gained ground on his recovery from a major hamstring tear. Kittle’s energy was notably high during the team’s Wednesday morning walkthrough, and the 49ers officially opened his 21-day practice window. The organization hopes to have him out there for their next game versus the Atlanta Falcons.

“I think it would be great [to get Kittle back],” – Christian McCaffrey

Along with these moves, plenty of other key contributors missed Tuesday’s session with a combined list of ailments. Jauan Jennings has a rib, ankle, and shoulder injury. At the same time, Jordan Watkins is not on the field as he’s been sidelined with a calf injury. Kevin Givens is working through a pectoral issue. CJ West is dealing with a thumb injury, Kalia Davis has a hand injury, and Renardo Green has a neck injury.

New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones threw without restriction in his most intense practice to date. He dealt with a knee issue and late-season oblique strain. Both Purdy and Jones will be under the microscope still as the week goes on.

As the team prepares for their next opponent, it is a huge blow. The health of important players such as Purdy and Kittle will be very important for the 49ers’ success. Although the need for caution is strong, the coaching staff is optimistic as they continue to gauge their athletes’ preparedness for the challenges ahead.
