Bristol City celebrated a significant step towards the playoffs after securing a 2-2 draw against Preston North End on Saturday. The game, played at Deepdale stadium, featured a brace from Bristol City’s Ross McCrorie, continuing his recent scoring run. Aside from the result, there were plenty of exciting attacking plays from both sides featuring scintillating shots and save of the year candidates Bristol City’s Max O’Leary.
The game opened at a frenetic pace with both teams going at it from the start. Bristol City took their chances and were clinical, scoring with both their shots on target. They took advantage of their few opportunities and scored two allowed goals. McCrorie continued to light it up on the pitch, netting a brace. His performance on the ice was noted for his growing confidence in front of the net.
The Game’s Highlights
It was a defensive struggle in the first half with neither team able to break through. In the 27th minute, O’Leary made a crucial save, denying a low drive from Preston’s Milutin Osmajic at his near post. This increased the stakes for both teams as they looked to capture crucial points, setting the stage for an exciting matchup.
As the match progressed, Bristol City’s Scott Twine attempted to break the deadlock with a blocked free-kick, followed by a volley that swerved just over the bar. Anis Mehmeti nearly opened the scoring in style with a glancing header. It only left the bullseye just a tad outside of the mark!
Preston North End responded with an equalizer! Emil Riis added a third after a Brady corner was not cleared. This equalizer unrealistically swung momentum back in the direction of Preston, who wanted nothing more than a home victory.
Tactical Changes and Their Impact
In the 58th minute, Bristol City’s manager Liam Manning made a triple substitution in an effort to strengthen his side and regain control of the match. Those substitutions provided a much-needed jolt to Bristol City’s attack and helped them readily answer Preston’s equalizer.
Bristol City battled valiantly, but they were outgunned. In the 83rd minute Osmajic broke free of their defense and ripped in a second goal to pad Preston’s lead. McCrorie’s second negated that and ensured Bristol City would depart Deepdale with a share of the spoils firmly in hand.
“I guess I went through every emotion imaginable over the 90 minutes and those that followed the final whistle when we had to await the finish of games elsewhere.” – Paul Heckingbottom
After the match, Heckingbottom expressed his mixed feelings about the draw, highlighting the emotional rollercoaster experienced during the game. His tactical acumen and belief in his players was thoroughly tested over the course of the match.
Looking Ahead
That meant Bristol City were assured of their playoff place with this draw. Instead, they’ll be hoping to shock Sheffield United when they face the Blades in an exciting two-legged semi-final! So naturally, the team would love to do their road success in front of their own home supporters. Bristol City’s fans have been lauded for their incredible loyalty for the entire season. Those same players are now looking to recapture that support as they begin the second act of this dramatic play.
Manning’s side aims to build on their recent form and capitalize on McCrorie’s scoring ability. The team manager reiterated the need to keep the momentum going as they lead into the build up for semi-finals.
“I love being close to the action, but today it actually suited me to be away from it because I was able to keep a close eye on scores elsewhere, rather than have that information relayed to me.” – Paul Heckingbottom
Bristol City has qualified for the NWSL playoffs. Their goal would be to reiterate their strategies and channel the energy from their dedicated supporters to move them forward into the next round of the competition.
