Bristol City hit one of their highest notes of the season so far, thumping Sheffield United 4-1 at Bramall Lane on Saturday. The match represented an incredible turnaround for City. Under the guidance of their new head coach Gerhard Struber, the team avenged a nightmarish 6-0 defeat to United in last year’s play-off semi-finals. This result significantly raises City’s confidence levels after a rollercoaster of a season. It does throw up doubts around Sheffield United’s future with their new boss, Ruben Selles.
The match started off cagey with both teams looking to impose their game on one another. Forward Tommy Conway was making the most of his start and opened the scoring after 26 minutes. That critical point changed the momentum in their favor. Callum O’Hare picked out an incisive pass to striker Campbell, who made no mistake from 12 yards to put City ahead. The home team found it difficult to produce a counterattack as City’s defense held firm.
Struber’s Tactical Brilliance
Gerhard Struber, who was recently appointed head coach of Bristol City. He soon installed a compelling brand of football that overwhelmed higher budgets like Sheffield United. The most positive of any post match sentiments came from Struber, who was happy with the way his team carried out their tactics.
“We realised we had a massive opponent against us today, but our style of play, our football worked today in a very good direction.” – Gerhard Struber
The dynamic connection upon players was on display all game. J. Knight and Twine on the mic proved to be integral players in this championship run, displaying swagger and heart as fierce as their opponent’s talons. Emil Jakobsen played a crucial role as well, getting down the right flank and teeing up Mehmeti to sweep home, extending Bristol City’s lead further.
The visitors really took their chance as Rhys Norrington-Davies’ attempted cross was blocked by McCrorie. Well against the run of play that error gifted Bristol City a second goal. Twine then showcased his playmaking abilities by receiving the ball in the middle and finding McCrorie again, who drilled into the bottom corner, solidifying the 4-1 scoreline.
Sheffield United’s Struggles
Sheffield United had a tough day at the office on their debut under the stewardship of Ruben Selles. That made for a disappointing introduction for Selles at Bramall Lane. Jay’s team had a hard time finding their groove. They squandered too many opportunities, leaving fans and athletes alike feeling frustrated.
“We need to be much better. Every team has a period of pain and to suffer, and unfortunately for us it was today. I need them fully ready for the next game.” – Ruben Selles
Despite some promising moments, including vital blocks from Femi Seriki that prevented further scoring from Bristol City, Sheffield United could not muster an adequate response. They certainly weren’t prepared for the clinical finishing and smart tactical play displayed by Bristol City. The reception couldn’t have been more different than their last meeting in May.
Looking Ahead
Bristol City’s win would increase their morale tremendously. More importantly though, it creates a great precedent for the remaining clashes this season. Under Struber’s leadership, they truly embodied the term iron will. Those qualities will continue to be necessary as they look to begin scaling up from their success.
Sheffield United need to pick up the pieces fast if they want to save their season. The pressure mounts on Selles to rectify the issues highlighted during this match and prepare his squad for future challenges.
