The immense and iconic Gabba stadium in Brisbane is slated for demolition after hosting the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Gabba has a proud legacy as a Test cricket ground. Soon, it will become a new 25,000-seater national aquatic centre. The aging stadium was reaching the end of its useful life. Plans for replacement are already well underway.
During the 2032 Games, the Gabba will still be an active venue, hosting the opening and closing ceremonies. On top of that, it will be the main location for athletics events and cricket matches during the Olympics. Once these needs have been met, the stadium will be demolished to make way for more development.
The new national aquatic centre will be built in Spring Hill, close to the main stadium. This central location will help to continue Brisbane’s great sporting tradition while bringing in much needed, new world-class facilities to host future aquatic events.
Though it is about to be torn down, the Gabba’s contributions to cricketing history will live on. The stadium's role in hosting cricket events, both leading up to and during the 2032 Games, underscores its importance to Brisbane and Australia's sporting landscape.
