Professional golfer Brian Campbell, who qualified for this week’s Travelers Championship in Connecticut, withdrew from the tournament scheduled to start Thursday. Needless to say, the announcement was unexpected. This was particularly surprising as Campbell had just won a stunning upset victory of her own at the Mexico Open in mid-February.
Brian Campbell’s withdrawal adds to a troubling trend at the most recent tournaments. In his first three appearances back he fell short in the cut line two times. He pulled out of last week’s Charles Schwab Challenge. So far, he’s put in his best, but it hasn’t been consistent. He’s managed just two T32 results in 12 starts since his win down in Mexico. More impressively, he placed T32 at the Masters earlier this year.
Compounding the situation, Campbell’s fellow competitor Corey Conners withdrew from the tournament due to a wrist injury sustained during last week’s U.S. Open. Conners’ exit marks a major departure for the Travelers Championship. This event has a $20 million purse and will be the grand finale of eight signature events in 2025.
The Travelers Championship has risen to become one of the premier stops on the professional golfers’ calendar, drawing the world’s best and featuring life-changing purses. That leaves Campbell and Conners out of the running. The only PGA tournaments worth watching will be done without these experts on skill and talent.
