Hampshire have signed Brett Hampton, one of their new overseas players for the first two months of the County Championship season. He was an accomplished quick bowler, as well as a highly experienced right-handed bat. Hampton is called upon to replace Jack Edwards, who was ruled out. Edwards sustained a serious knee injury playing for New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield. A long recovery, at least six weeks, is necessary after surgery for Edwards.
A veteran of 10 first-class seasons with Northern Districts back in New Zealand, Hampton arrives at Hampshire with considerable experience. In his brief time in the Plunket Shield, he was a sparkling success. He ended up scoring 581 runs and picking up 23 wickets, proving himself to be a complete standout. His overall first-class batting average of 30.66 is a remarkable achievement. At the same time, his bowling average of 27.70 further illustrates his prowess as an invaluable all-rounder.
The team will certainly be bolstered by Hampton’s array of tools as they look for a deep run in this year’s four-game home stretch. His inclusion comes just in time as Hampshire looks to host Yorkshire at home this Friday. Hampton described himself as “very excited” at the prospect of joining the County Championship and playing a part in Hampshire’s promotion push.
“I’m excited to come and play in the County Championship,” – Brett Hampton
“The team had a great campaign last year so hopefully I can help the club push for the title. I look forward to joining up with the rest of the squad in a few days’ time.” – Brett Hampton
Hampshire’s management is optimistic about Hampton’s contribution to the team during Edwards’ absence. His experience as a batter and bowler will add real depth to Hampshire’s batting order. Fans can’t wait to see his new found versatility on display in games to come.
