Brentford went on to defeat Bournemouth, 2-0, in the exciting double elimination round. This high-profile victory sent them through to the next stage of the Carabao Cup at Griffin Park. This victory represents a massive achievement for Brentford’s young new manager Keith Andrews. It is now his second win in just four days!
It was difficult to expect that outcome in the match which had seen Brentford take the lead just before half-time, Fabio Carvalho scoring in the 34th minute. Carvalho took advantage of an expertly timed step-over by Kristoffer Ajer, who left the ball to Carvalho’s surprise with a cross from Rico Henry. The 20-year-old forward ghosted into the box and deftly shot the ball into the far post with his first touch, giving Brentford the lead.
In the second half, the Bees went two to the good. Replacement Igor Thiago cut in from the right, landing his effort past Marcin Budz’ in the 65th minute. That goal was set up by a vital moment from Frank Onyeka, who won the ball back deep in Bournemouth’s half. Onyeka to prod Carvalho Onyeka showed great vision and pace of thought to find Carvalho. Carvalho attracted three Bournemouth defenders before sliding the ball to Thiago, and he drilled home from eight yards.
During the course of the game, Bournemouth barely challenged Spurs goalkeeper, Hugo Lloris. Evanilson came close with a shot that was cleared off the line and another effort that was saved by Brentford goalkeeper Valdimarsson. Then, in the 54th minute, Amine Adli, another summer recruit for Bournemouth, got off a quick strike from distance. Valdimarsson was forced into a spectacular save to prevent the ball entering the goal.
Bournemouth’s fortunes turned dramatically when Julian Araujo saw his second yellow card in stoppage time. His reckless challenge on Thiago reduced his side to ten men for the closing stages of the game.
Brentford’s starting XI was not without its alterations either, with Aaron Hickey making way for Dango Outtara just shy of the hour mark. Outtara, a former Bournemouth forward and Brentford’s record signing, added depth to Brentford’s attacking options.
Ben Gannon Doak (right) and Amine Adli (left) made their full debuts for Bournemouth in this match. Their performances belied the fact that the team drafted a complicated mix of talent ready to be infused into the NBA.
