Brandon Aubrey, the 30-year-old rookie kicker for the Dallas Cowboys, garnered a ton of headlines this season for his kicking prowess. Aubrey is just about through his fourth year of professional football. If the season ends without a deal, he’ll be a restricted free agent. His personal record is six 60-plus yard field goals, the most in NFL history. With a remarkable 65-yarder against the Baltimore Ravens last year at AT&T Stadium, he has already demonstrated his potential for long-distance kicks.
Although Aubrey hasn’t hit a kick from longer than 69 yards yet, he came close recently with the chance to boot a longer one. He has all the confidence in the world when it comes to kicking a 70-yard field goal. That’s not what he’s most concerned with at this moment. Instead, he looks to be more consistent and help his team win the next game.
AUbrey’s kick is very intentional, with a high awareness of what he is doing mechanically. He reasoned that his plant foot was a full 3½ yards behind the marker. That’s where punter Bryan Anger cradled the ball before launching his record-setting 61-yard punt. That approach is consistent with the mechanics he’s employed on every one of his long kicks.
Candidly, Aubrey isn’t going to attempt field goals at extra-extra-long ranges very often – though he easily could. He likes to emphasize consistency over distance at practice sessions. He compared his kicking swing to a golfer’s swing, focusing on the need for good timing and body control.
That’s not going to make me overhaul my warmup routine, We couldn’t disagree more about that,” Aubrey said. Instead I focus on hitting my typical kicks and judging if they go an additional 5 yards. Then I’ll take that feedback to the coach and that’s where we’ll set our boundary at.
During his career before this season, Aubrey was five for seven on attempts from 60 yards or longer. Notably, he sent the game into overtime with a 64-yarder against the New York Giants in Week 2 of this season. This performance helped establish him as one of the NFL’s most reliable kickers, known for making long-distance kicks in the clutch.
From day one, Aubrey’s teammates have been outspoken about their confidence in his abilities. Terence Steele remarked, “No doubt in my mind he can do it,” referring to Aubrey’s potential to break the 70-yard mark. Steele was unequivocal in his assessment, “I think he can do it all the time. That’s the scary part! He can absolutely drop those deep bombs.”
>Jake Ferguson opened up about his experience. He recalled how his alter ego would learn to use the kicking slider in video games to make impossible field goals. “I remember playing Madden Football back in the day and using the kicking slider’s kick power all the way up to 100 just so I can make that field goal, and now he’s doing it in real time,” Ferguson noted.
Evan McPherson, another young kicker making waves in the league, believes Aubrey has what it takes. He thinks Aubrey has the leg and accuracy to clear 70 yards. As per usual, he was right, and as he put it, “He’s got to get placed in the circumstance. Sure, 70 to — I would say — 73 is very much in play, particularly for him, for sure. He’s such an explosive kicker. You know, big dude and just has a ton of juice.
And while Aubrey aims for greatness on the pitch, he’s looking beyond individual honors to the short-term goal of success. No, I just want to be on the roster next week,” he said. Amazingly, he even brushed off the prospect of breaking the competition records.
Aubrey knows what it’s like to be a kicker. He speaks to the pressure of his rookie contract, in which future advantages are not assured. “You’ve never really made it as a kicker, especially if you’re on the rookie contract — no guarantees there,” he said.
The psychological side of kicking is no less important for Aubrey. He highlighted that overthinking can hinder performance: “The harder you swing, the harder it is to time up all the moving parts. I’m trying to let my body take over because it knows what to do, not overthink and say, ‘Just look at the uprights,’ and, ‘OK, I need a little bit more,’ I guess, and then the body delivers it.”
With the season boiling over and the Cowboys continuing to pursue their playoff aspirations, the buzz is ELECTRIC. Fans and fellow teammates are excited to find out if Brandon Aubrey will get his opportunity at making history with a record-breaking 70-yard field goal. That unique blend of talent, focus, and work ethic makes him the overwhelming favorite to pull off this historic feat.
