Bill Chisholm is putting the finishing touches on his acquisition of the Boston Celtics. He’s expected to close the shocking $6.1 billion deal in the next week. This upcoming sale marks a seismic shift in the franchise’s leadership. Current governor Wyc Grousbeck will step down following the ownership transfer.
As the new executive director, Chisholm is deeply dedicated to connecting with the greater Boston community. As he moves into his new role, he promises to do things differently and be more hands on. The sale that was initially announced back in March was paving the way for a fresh start in Celtics history. Grousbeck headed the coalition that bought the team in 2002 for $360 million. He had made long term plans to remain in his posts of governor and CEO until 2028. As ownership of the House passes, his job will look very different.
Though Grousbeck is stepping down as governor, he’s staying on as CEO. Once the sale closes, he too will become an alternate governor. His eagerness to remain was only confirmed further in March when he said in an interview with ESPN that he was “glad to do so.” Chisholm has requested that Grousbeck continue in the CEO role for the next three seasons, indicating a collaborative effort to ensure a smooth transition.
They rank third behind only the New York Yankees and Montreal Canadiens in total championships in all of North American professional sports leagues. This storied legacy adds significant weight to Chisholm’s new ownership as he looks to uphold the team’s rich traditions while steering it toward future success.
Bill Chisholm and his wife, Kimberly, are looking forward to diving deeply into the local community. Their proactive involvement will earn the gratitude of millions of sports fans and important stakeholders. They are assuming control of one of basketball’s most storied and hallowed franchises.
