Boston, meet your newest member of the Boston Celtics’ 2015-16 roster. They indicated that by signing 22-year-old guard JD Davison into a full standard two-year NBA deal. This decision follows a resounding season with High School G League Maine. With them, Davison put on a show and won G League MVP. His agent, Corey Marcum, confirmed the contract conversion Saturday to ESPN.
Davison was selected by the Boston Celtics in the second round of the 2022 NBA Draft. On the field for the past three seasons, he’s been a reliable and effective player on offense. Despite averaging 1.7 points per game in his 34 career NBA games, his recent performance in the G League has significantly raised expectations for his future contributions to the Celtics.
And when he got playing time with G League Maine, Davison showed a prolific scoring punch — 25.1 PPG on a healthy .576/.409/.884 shooting line. Not only did he lead his team in scoring, but he averaged 7.6 assists and 5.6 rebounds per game. This performance is an example of his rounded out skill set. These gaudy numbers were a key component in his selection as the league’s most valuable player this season.
As such, the conversion of Davison’s contract represents the Celtics’ belief in his ability to make an impact at the NBA level. With no bounds to his shooting range, his time in the G League provided him with impactful proof-of-play experience. It forced him to sharpen his skills playing against more established players.
With Davison back in the NBA, he’s setting his sights on continuing his recent success. More than anything, he wants to be the best possible contributor on the Celtics’ championship chase. His blend of scoring ability and playmaking skills could prove advantageous for a team looking to bolster its roster as it prepares for the upcoming season.
