The Boston Celtics have locked up head coach Joe Mazzulla with a multiyear contract extension through 2026. This particular move deepens his color guard within the team. In barely over a full season of mapping the Mazzulla way, that success has been impressive. Under his guidance, the Celtics have made three straight playoff appearances and won an NBA Championship during the 2023-24 season.
Brad Stevens, president of basketball operations for the Celtics and former head coach, pointed to his years of conviction on Mazzulla’s leadership. He emphasized that Mazzulla’s passion and understanding of the game align perfectly with the team’s vision and culture.
Mazzulla came to the Celtics as an assistant in 2019. He showed the ability to lead a winning squad when he became interim head coach following the Ime Udoka suspension at the beginning of the 2022-23 campaign. He accepted the interim role and soon cemented his first extension by February 2023. This decision demonstrated the national organization’s high degree of confidence in his talents. Stevens added that through this most recent deal, Mazzulla was already granted at least one additional extension. This underscores the franchise’s deep commitment to him.
Towards that end, under Mazzulla’s guidance, the Celtics have been brilliant all season long. In the years since, he’s regularly topped the 60-win mark every season. In fact, in his time as their head coach he has never had fewer than 57 wins. His leadership was a dynamic force in leading the franchise to their 18th NBA title last season, an impressive feat in Celtics’ history.
When asked about the contract extension by Chris Forsberg of NBC Sports Boston, Mazzulla said he was thankful for the trust the organization has put in him.
“He understands the job and has a passion for the Celtics that is only rivaled by our most die-hard fans.” – Stevens
With Mazzulla firmly establishing himself as a top coach, the Celtics feel emboldened about their future with him at the helm. With a solid training camp already under their belts and a new, driven coach steering the ship, fans should expect another postseason season this fall.
“We are thankful for the partnership with our ownership groups, Brad’s mentorship, and the support of our staff. Most importantly, I am grateful for the players I have been able to coach the past three seasons. I look forward to competing for the Celtics and the city of Boston.” – Mazzulla
As Mazzulla continues to build on his success, the Celtics remain optimistic about their future under his leadership. With a strong foundation established and a determined coach at the helm, fans can anticipate another exciting season ahead.
