Bistmack Biyombo has rejoined the San Antonio Spurs for a one-year deal, officially. Reserve free agent center, who came aboard in February. As a reserve, he’ll continue adding strength and weight to the frontcourt. This decision is a win-win for both Biyombo and the Spurs, looking ahead to the 2023-24 NBA campaign.
Biyombo has provided a strong veteran presence behind emerging first-round pick Victor Wembanyama and Luke Kornet since his arrival in San Antonio. His experience and defensive skills as a top-tier playmaker for his position will be great assets to the Spurs. This year, they hope to expand on that success.
Over the course of his career, Biyombo has appeared in 867 NBA games while starting 377 of those games. He’s made himself into an extremely dependable go-to center. On the season, he’s averaging 5.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks in just 19.5 minutes per game. Whether it’s his shot creation on the offensive end or providing that rim protection defensively, he obviously makes this team’s rotation and contributions that much more important.
Biyombo, the seventh overall pick in that same 2011 NBA draft, has rode that rollercoaster and more, having played for seven different NBA teams. He’s back now with the Spurs, a new chapter in his life in the league. He has proven time and again throughout his career his 100 percent dedication and tremendous work ethic.
The rebuilding Spurs will surely benefit from Biyombo’s veteran experience and valuable support. Their goal is to continue building on their promising young core and climb higher up the ranks of the competitive Western Conference. He still serves a vital role off the bench. This will be particularly key in monitoring the minutes of rookie starters such as Wembanyama, given how much promise the Spurs apparently see in him.
