After the first round of The Open Championship kicked off, the betting odds have changed dramatically. Matt Fitzpatrick is the leader of the pack and the betting favourite at 10-1. Harris English is next closest, with 18-1 odds. Christiaan Bezuidenhout is next among the top contenders at 30-1.
The challenge is as great as ever, with Fitzpatrick, English and Bezuidenhout each contributing to a three-way tie at the top at 4-under 67. Their mouth-dropping performances have long since made them serious contenders for the ultimate championship crown. Among the biggest movers in betting odds has been World No. He has gone from +500 to +210 after starting the first round at a blistering 3-under par. Scheffler will tee off on Friday at 10:10 a.m. ET.
Rory McIlroy’s odds have taken a bit of a jump from +700 to +800. Despite that, he shot 1-under and sits tied for 20th place after the opening round. He is scheduled to begin his second round at 5:09 a.m. ET on Friday and will look to improve his standing as the tournament progresses.
Haotong Li and Jacob Skov Olesen are other intriguing names. They’re considered longshots, at 500-1 and 1000-1 odds, respectively. Despite those joined on chances of victory looking pretty thin based on where they are in the polls now.
J.J. Spaun had one of the biggest drops in the tournament after a 2 over par score. He fell from an opening 90-1 down to a crazy 400-1. He is presently tied for 71st all-time. For him to get back his lead in the race for the tournament, he requires a historic comeback.
As we get closer to the match play semifinals, excitement grows at the prospect of seeing these athletes battling each other on the links. With plenty still within striking distance, it is sure to be a thrilling back nine as the second act of The Open Championship unfolds.
