The successful right-armer is set to continue with Northamptonshire after his contract was extended officially the day before on Tuesday. He will remain with the county through at least the end of the 2027 season. This decision is a short but significant landmark in Sanderson’s career. It demonstrates his dedication to the club and serves to illustrate his worth as a player.
Sanderson started his professional career at Yorkshire, where he first developed a passion for pedagogy. But after being released by Yorkshire, he got a second chance in 2015 when Northamptonshire signed him. Since then, he has proven to be a valuable asset to the team. You simply can’t deny him when he continues to perform consistently across every format of the game.
Sanderson was the player most crucial to Northamptonshire’s success in 2016, leading the Steelbacks to a surprise T20 Blast title. His performance in this season’s competition has been particularly noteworthy. He currently leads the T20 Blast with 21 wickets, contributing significantly to Northants’ position at the top of the North Group.
The sheer quality of his play Sanderson has returned an incredible 584 wickets at 19.5 across just 245 career appearances. He has a superb first-class wicket haul of 416 at an average of a miserly 22. Even at 36 years old, he continues to display his artistry on the field. Beyond that, he brings a really unique experience and wisdom to the younger players in the dressing room.
His head coach at Northants, Darren Lehmann, said Sanderson was “a huge part” of their promotion success. He added, “He’s been a fantastic player for Northamptonshire for an awful long time and is a key player for us. He emphasized the significance of Sanderson’s role in mentoring younger teammates: “The knowledge that he’s able to pass on to the younger players around the dressing room is invaluable.”
On reflecting his time at Northants, Sanderson revealed his excitement to continue the journey he’s started with the club. “I’ve loved my time here, it’s a great place for me to play my cricket and I’ll continue to enjoy it over the next couple of years,” he said. He acknowledged the team’s collective ambition: We’ve really got a good mix, everyone’s willing to learn and there’s a desire to do well with the lads’ mentality.
