Ben Griffin displayed incredible steadiness and poise throughout the Procore Championship. He jumped into a commanding three-shot lead by shooting a bogey-free 6-under 66 on back-to-back days. Griffin’s stellar performance moved him to 14-under 130 overall, leaving him in excellent position as the tournament heads into the weekend.
That tournament, which was held against the beautiful backdrop of Napa, California, found Griffin breezing around the course with laser-like focus. He showed both consistency and accuracy throughout the round, featuring the back nine as he gained strokes on the field by managing the three par 5’s flawlessly. Griffin demonstrated precise shot-making, notably hitting a beautiful tee shot on the par-3 second hole, landing it perfectly over a steep bunker to a challenging left pin.
Griffin’s round was filled with highlights, including the pivotal birdie on Hole 6 that extended his lead to three strokes. The golf tournament has already proved to be a major focus for Griffin, who made no secret of his commitment to the challenge.
I really have just been concentrated on this golf tournament Griffin said, noting his goal to keep his playing at a high level.
Even after completing his competitive round, he continued to be focused, spending additional time on the practice green before calling it a night by honing his putting stroke. On this beautiful late summer day in Napa, he was all the more alone, practicing without a peer. His drive to do better and move up in the standings was evident.
And that’s how this week I tried to literally do the same things that I’m doing, Griffin said. His method is the clearest example of a plan to maintain cohesion and poise for the entire length of the titleholder’s run.
With other rivals perhaps thinking ahead to bigger tournaments like the Ryder Cup, Griffin is not looking past this tournament. Today, he’s thinking only about the next bridge, and equally determined to continue his run of success. I put my eyes on confidence and motivation, not in a political way, maybe,” he said. I’m hoping to continue to advance as I move into the thirty-two’s at the tail-end of this tourney.
As Griffin continues to top the field, the focus turns to whether or not he can keep up this quality of play over four more rounds. His ability to endure very little stress during a breezy morning reinforces his readiness for the challenges that lie ahead.
