On Thursday, Adrien Dumont de Chassart–the surprise rock star of the day. He made history when he shot an incredible 11-under 59 in the Wichita Open, cementing his place in golfing history. That stellar play turned him into just the 14th player in Korn Ferry Tour history to post a sub-60 round. The 25-year-old Belgian golfer showed just what he’s capable of on one of the game’s biggest stages. He broke the old tournament mark of 60, which Justin Suh had shot on the last round during 2022.
All eyes were on Dumont de Chassart as he quickly made his name known. He even birdied the first three holes and continued to impress on the front nine, nailing five birdies total before making the turn. Finally, he holed a long 6-iron that set him up for what would be his final birdie on the front nine. This great shot on hole eight ultimately won her the tournament. Despite facing a setback with a bogey on the seventh hole, he maintained his momentum and birdied the tenth hole right after.
The golfer’s performance did not go unnoticed. He had a few hiccups on the back nine, including a second bogey on the fifteenth hole. After a shaky start to the back nine, he quickly regained his rhythm by birdying holes 16 and 17. This amazing play moved his score to stunning 11-under for the day.
“Honestly, with all the rain and storms that they got, I thought the course was in really good shape,” – Adrien Dumont de Chassart
Beyond the Buzz, Dumont de Chassart has done something extraordinary. He has at least shared the lead with Alejandro Tosti, equalising the course record of 60 set earlier this year. Beyond pure turnout, the weather created conditions that severely enhanced his performance. With weather ideal for golfing at 80 degrees and a light 10-mile-per-hour breeze, the atmosphere was already alive with excitement.
“Played really well down the stretch,” – Adrien Dumont de Chassart
Afterwards, Dumont de Chassart had a great perspective on his game. Not only did he acknowledge the high-pressure moments, but he proudly touted his greatness in overcoming them. He’d been pleased with the way he closed out the round, especially after shaking away a four-foot miss on the seventh hole.
“Played really well down the stretch. Missed a shorty on 7, but that’s what’s cool about golf, you feel nervous even on 4-footers, right? So I’m glad I bounced back and hit a really, really good 6-iron on 17, hole 8, to set up an easy birdie.” – Adrien Dumont de Chassart
