With a second-round 68 on Friday, Becky Morgan rocketed to the top of the leaderboard at the U.S. Senior Women’s Open. On Friday, she fired an astonishing 5-under 68 at the San Diego Country Club to make the cut. The 50-year-old Welsh golfer champions the tournament after 36 holes at 4-under 142. He built that daunting cushion even after signing for a 74 in his first round.
It was on-stage during the event that Morgan’s talents really dazzled. It was one of just two rounds in the 60s posted throughout the first two rounds. Her putter was rock solid on Friday, which served her well, to say the least, on those greens.
“This is my first one, having turned 50 last September,” Morgan remarked, reflecting on her recent milestone and its impact on her professional career.
The first-round leader Annika Sorenstam shot a 78 on Friday and fell off the leaderboard. Her fall left her six strokes adrift of Morgan. This put her in a tie along with Juli Inkster for 10th place at 2 over par. Sorenstam’s early lead was soon eclipsed by her failure to build on the momentum in Round Two.
A few players are hot on Morgan’s heels. Liselotte Neumann, Ashli Bunch and Moira Dunn-Bohls are tied for the lead, all 3 under par. Juli Inkster shot the highest score of the day at 73 on Friday but she’s still well in contention given where she stands. Both Maria McBride and Corina Kelepouris made impressive statements, too, with rounds of 70 and 71.
Karrie Webb had a rough go as she missed the cut at 3 over after rounds of 73-76.
As this tournament progresses, all eyes will be on Morgan, and rightfully so. Will she be able to maintain her lead and win her first major championship in the Senior Women’s Open?
