Becky Morgan Claims U.S. Senior Women’s Open Title in Dominant Fashion

Welshwoman Becky Morgan captured the U.S. Senior Women’s Open title on Sunday. In her 1976 tournament debut, she scored an impressive 7-under 285 at San Diego Country Club. Morgan sealed her triumph with a mighty 3-under 70 finale. She built a daunting six-stroke lead, ultimately clear of Juli Inkster’s final round 71.

As you can imagine, the competition was tough, especially in the initial rounds. Annika Sorenstam, arguably the most recognized name in the history of women’s golf, began the tournament as a first-round leader. She rode that momentum to a strong finish, tying for eighth at 3-over par and shooting a second-round 72. Morgan had stiff competition from the winners of Maria McBride and Corina Kelepouris. The two of them had even tied with her for the third-round lead but couldn’t hold on in the final round. McBride and Kelepouris both fell to rounds of 78, ending in a tie for fourth at 1-over par.

Morgan’s consistent play over the course of the tournament proved her to be a player with tenacity and talent. That’s where Johnson began, and she just never let up. On the last day, she widened her lead further showing that she knows how to deal with pressure better than anyone. At 65, Juli Inkster made a remarkable run. She was unable to catch up and lost by a hair’s breadth to win reelection in second place.

Swedish former LPGA Tour winner Liselotte Neumann did enough to earn a mention, at 3-under after a tidy 74 of her own. The leaderboard highlighted the intense competition level that was present at the event. Heavy-hitters traded blows to defend their treads as the tournament progressed.
