Bears’ Pursuit of Steelers’ Mike Tomlin Meets Firm Resistance

The Chicago Bears recently reached out to the Pittsburgh Steelers to explore the possibility of negotiating with and potentially trading for head coach Mike Tomlin. The Steelers, however, swiftly dismissed the inquiry, according to league sources who spoke with ESPN. In addition to the Bears, at least one other team expressed interest in Tomlin, only to find out that his contract includes a no-trade clause, effectively halting any such discussions.

Mike Tomlin has established himself as a formidable figure in the NFL, never having experienced a losing season during his tenure in Pittsburgh. With a career record of 183-107-2, he stands as the second-winningest coach in Steelers history, trailing only Chuck Noll. Last offseason, Tomlin secured a three-year contract extension, making him one of the highest-paid head coaches in the league. This steadfast commitment to Tomlin's leadership underscores the Steelers' reluctance to entertain any offers for their coach.

The Steelers have a storied history of coaching stability, with only three head coaches since 1969: Chuck Noll, Bill Cowher, and Mike Tomlin. Tomlin, who turns 53 in March, has been at the helm for 18 seasons. Despite recent playoff challenges, resulting in five consecutive one-and-done trips, the organization remains steadfast in their support of Tomlin’s leadership abilities and vision for the team.

The Chicago Bears, meanwhile, continue their search for a new head coach with a broad approach. They have requested interviews with several candidates, including Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady, Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell, and Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury. Additionally, they have completed interviews with other notable figures such as interim head coach Thomas Brown, former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll, and former Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy.

Tomlin's enduring influence within the Steelers organization is evident not only through his impressive track record but also through his approach to the pressures of his role.

"I understand the nature of what it is that we do, the attention and criticism that comes with it… I enjoy the urgency that comes with what I do and what we do." – Mike Tomlin
