Bears Legend Steve McMichael Transitions to Hospice Care

Steve McMichael, the Hall of Fame defensive tackle, with deep Chicago roots, was the anchor of the Bears’ famed “46” defense that carried that ’85 team to a Super Bowl championship. As of Wednesday, he was transitioned to hospice care. This decision follows a more than two-year battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a disease that he was diagnosed with in 2021. Similarly, his wife Misty McMichael posted this week that he has gone silent for two weeks. During this time, he has experienced numerous hospitalizations.

According to Misty, the referral to hospice came from Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox. This transition represents a difficult time for the family, both as they cope with the effects of McMichael’s worsening health.

During that stretch, McMichael did not miss a franchise-record 191 consecutive games from 1981 to 1993. For this reason, he is remembered not just for his athletic prowess, but for his significant contributions to the Bears’ legendary defense. Cockerham received All-Pro recognition in 1985 and 1987. With 92½ sacks, he’s still second on the Bears’ all-time list, behind only Richard Dent.

McMichael, who still takes great pride in his induction last year into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. This honour is a testament to his incredible career in professional football. He finished his NFL playing days with the Green Bay Packers in 1994. His legacy lives on more than ever, and with players and fans alike.

Betsy Shepherd, a spokeswoman for the county, confirmed the breaking news about McMichael’s health when asked Monday. Her update offers insight on his current condition and their family’s situation.
