The Chicago Bears have set their sights on revamping their defensive line, positioning it as a significant area of need this offseason. With $76.2 million in cap space available, as reported by Roster Management System, the Bears are strategically planning to bolster their pass rush capabilities. The team is actively exploring options in the draft, and potential trades, with a particular focus on acquiring impactful edge rushers. Among the potential targets is Cleveland Browns' defensive end Myles Garrett, who recently requested a trade.
The Bears hold a top 10 pick in the upcoming draft and possess two valuable second-round picks, including Carolina's No. 39 selection. This positions them advantageously to target premier talent, particularly in a draft class noted for its strength in the defensive line. ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. projects seven defensive linemen and pass rushers as first-round picks in his latest mock draft. The Bears' general manager, Ryan Poles, has expressed a proactive approach in addressing the team's defensive needs.
"I would probably argue and say if you get a good pass rusher and you draft a pass rusher, you can't have enough good ones." – Ryan Poles
The Bears' pass rush showed signs of improvement in 2024, with enhancements in sacks, sack percentage, and quarterback hits. However, there remains a pressing need to more effectively impact opposing quarterbacks. The release of veteran defensive end DeMarcus Walker freed up $5.25 million against the salary cap, allowing the Bears flexibility to pursue new talent.
Montez Sweat, Chicago's leading rusher last year, recorded 5.5 sacks. The Bears are keen on finding a complementary player to pair with Sweat and enhance their defensive front. Poles is exploring various avenues to assemble a formidable unit.
"You want to see how you could put the puzzle together where you can kind of fill all the needs perfectly. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't." – Ryan Poles
Myles Garrett represents an attractive option for the Bears. As a proven talent in the NFL, his addition could significantly elevate the team's pass rush capabilities. Garrett's desire for a trade provides the Bears with a unique opportunity to potentially acquire his services.
The team's focus extends beyond just rushing the passer. Ryan Johnson emphasized the importance of a balanced approach to defense.
"Talking to (Dennis Allen) has been very enlightening, because we share the same mindset when it comes to defensive football which is we want to affect the passer." – Ryan Johnson
Johnson elaborated on the multifaceted strategies involved in bolstering the defense.
"There's a lot of ways to do that. Certainly, up front the pass rush is the primary thing you think of but also on the back end, it's challenging the receivers and disrupting the timing. So when we look at guys that are available, absolutely, we want to upgrade the pass rush and we also want on the backend to come up and lock down receivers as well. So it's the fine balance and marriage between the rush and coverage that we are looking to augment." – Ryan Johnson
As part of their comprehensive assessment of prospects, the Bears are actively evaluating talent at the combine. This evaluation period is crucial for understanding which players will fit best into their evolving defensive scheme. The strength of this year's draft class in the defensive line plays into their hands, potentially allowing them to secure key assets.
