Basketball Games to Tip Off Ahead of 2028 Los Angeles Opening Ceremony

International basketball’s global governing body, FIBA, recently published a new schedule for the Men’s and Women’s 2028 Olympic Games. We’re looking forward to an amazing event in Los Angeles! The Olympic basketball tournaments are set to begin July 12, 2028. That’s as little as two days before their supposed opening ceremony, currently scheduled for July 14. This change is designed to make the overall format of the competition more exciting while improving the experience for players and fans as well.

The preliminary schedule opens on an exciting note for hoops. Looking forward to three great games on July 12, and three more on July 13! This shrewd scheduling creates a more staggered and realistic flow of competition culminating in the final medal matches.

Basketball isn’t the only sport that will get a jump on the official start of the Games. These sports are expanding opportunities and pipelines such as field hockey, rugby sevens, water polo, handball, cricket and soccer. This practice not only raises awareness but highlights the incredible range of athletic talent. Of course, that excitement should only continue to build as we move closer to next year’s opening ceremony.

The U.S. men’s and women’s basketball teams are both coming into the tournament as reigning champions. They are rightfully proud of winning their respective titles in past Olympic Games. The U.S. women’s team boasts an impressive record of eight consecutive gold medals, while the men’s team has clinched five straight golds. With their ongoing reign of terror on the pitch, a high bar is set for their play on Los Angeles.

Our bracket tournament is just getting started and we’re already feeling the temperature rise! Mark your calendars for the bronze-medal games July 28 and 29, and the exciting gold-medal games July 29 and 30.

FIBA has expressed confidence in this revised format, stating, “This adjustment allows the quarterfinals to be played over two days and will ensure that no game will start earlier than noon, enhancing the overall experience for players, teams, fans and broadcasters.” This level of precise planning further illustrates FIBA’s focus on providing an outstanding experience for the best of the Olympics.
