Barryn Sorrell, a promising edge rusher from Texas, has officially joined the Green Bay Packers after being selected in the fourth round of the NFL Draft. The Packers made Sorrell their 124th overall choice. On its face, this choice is a big deal for the player and the team.
To his surprise, Sorrell went the first two days of the draft without hearing his name called. He was the last player standing in the green room on Saturday. That might have been demoralizing to most. Yet, even through the draft, he kept his chin up. Day 1 was amazing, he was really motivated and surrounded by support, encouragement, and positivity from numerous NFL alumni that surrounded him.
Prior to selecting Sorrell, the Packers had the deepest of stakes on the offensive side of the ball. They selected three skill position offensive players, capped off by receivers Matthew Golden from Texas. That’s why the team made that plan deliberately. The smart strategic decision was to solidify their defense. They named Sorrell their top choice for his ruggedness and physicality to the edge position. His combination of speed and size makes him the Packers’ first defensive selection in this draft.
Sorrell was welcomed home to Green Bay by his parents and other immediate family members. He was filled with deep appreciation for the path that led him to this moment. His excitement was evident during the introductory presser. He danced with jubilant Packers fans and celebrated by doing a Lambeau Leap inside Lambeau Field, embodying the joy and defiance of that great Packers tradition.
“The memories that we were able to make this weekend,” – Sorrell
Sorrell pondered his decision to come back to college football for one more year. That decision turned out to be a great one when the Packers drafted him.
“So blessed and thankful that I made the decision to come back because it couldn’t have turned out better, man,” – Sorrell
Milters Hendrickson, a member of the Packers’ management team, lauded Sorrell’s persistence. He praised her dedication to staying engaged with the players on draft night. Hendrickson explained that Sorrell appeared to have done everything short of selling his firstborn child to make sure he was in the event.
“It sounds like he paid his way here. Just wanted to be a part of it. … If that isn’t enough of an anecdote to tell you what kind of kid that is, I don’t know what else there is.” – Milt Hendrickson
As Sorrell gets ready to make the jump to the pros, his attention is dedicated to forging a reputation for himself on the field. The Packers are expecting that he’ll make an immediate impact on their defensive front line. They’re more specifically looking to improve on their championship run by bolstering their edge rush.
