Ayo Dosunmu, the 25-year-old guard for the Bulls, is set to undergo shoulder surgery, sidelining him for four to six months. Dosunmu, who has been playing through pain and discomfort, expects to be back in time for the start of next season's training camp. This surgery comes as he approaches the final year of his three-year, $21 million contract with the team.
Dosunmu experienced discomfort on February 20 during a game against the Knicks, causing him to miss the next three games. He returned to the court on Friday night, logging 23 minutes against the Raptors. However, during this game, he felt a new kind of pain in his left shoulder, prompting further medical evaluation. An MRI revealed a fracture in the back of his shoulder that had been there for at least a year.
"I don't remember where it started at, but I do remember having it," Dosunmu stated.
Despite playing 46 games this season and achieving career-high averages of 12.3 points, 4.5 assists, and 3.5 rebounds, Dosunmu's health concerns have been a persistent challenge.
"My shoulder goes numb and [would pop] out in the back," he explained.
The decision to undergo surgery was not taken lightly. Dosunmu reflected on his season-long battle with injuries and the determination required to keep competing.
"It was something that I played on and I think I could have continued to play on, but I don't know for what reason," he remarked.
His commitment to the team was unwavering, as evidenced by his performance in what he suspected might be his last game of the season.
"Even the last game, just trying to give it my all. I had to help the team get win. Pretty much knew would probably been my last game of season. Just knew how I felt out there," Dosunmu shared.
