Australia Secures Ashes Early with Dominant T20 Victory

Australia clinched the Women's Ashes at the earliest opportunity, securing a decisive 57-run victory in the first T20 match. This win provided Australia with an unassailable 8-0 lead in the points-based series. The match took place on Thursday in Canberra at 08:40 GMT. Despite England's efforts, they were bowled out for 159, unable to overcome Australia's formidable performance.

The Women's Ashes series operates on a points-based system, with each white-ball match contributing two points. Australia had already demonstrated their prowess by sweeping the preceding one-day international series 3-0. As the second of three T20s unfolded, England faced challenges both on and off the field. An emotional moment for England wicketkeeper Amy Jones occurred when she miscounted the number of balls left in the 48th over, inadvertently leaving number 11 Lauren Bell exposed. Despite this, Jones received ample support from her teammates, showcasing the unity within the team.

Jones expressed optimism about England's future performances, stating, "Our best cricket is yet to come and we're all really excited about that." She acknowledged the emotional toll of the series but stressed her commitment to staying focused.

"I can only speak for myself, but I just don't like to look at it (the media), because I know that it could get to me and therefore it doesn't serve me," said Amy Jones.

England's coach Jon Lewis and captain Heather Knight refuted claims regarding the fitness of England players following the Women's T20 World Cup. They emphasized that the team remained prepared and motivated, despite facing criticism.

"It's their job to criticise, and of course it has an important purpose in growing the sport, but I don't think I need the outside noise," Amy Jones remarked.

Reflecting on missed opportunities throughout the series, Jones noted, "There's been many moments where we could have won different games, which I guess makes it all the more frustrating." However, she maintained a positive outlook, expressing hope that England could still entertain and inspire their supporters.

"We still feel positive that we can put on a show and entertain and inspire you all," she added.

Looking ahead, this year's Test will take place at Melbourne Cricket Ground for four days starting from 30 January. As England prepares for upcoming matches, they focus on improving their performance and showcasing their potential on a larger stage.
