Australia's cricket team faces a significant leadership challenge as captain Pat Cummins is "hugely unlikely" to be fit for the upcoming Champions Trophy. Coach Andrew McDonald announced the grim prospect, highlighting the team's predicament ahead of the tournament, which kicks off on 19 February. With teams required to finalize their preliminary squads by 12 February, Australia's lineup remains uncertain.
Cummins, who is absent from the ongoing Test series in Sri Lanka due to family commitments and an ankle injury, seems set to miss the Champions Trophy. The fast bowler has yet to resume bowling, prompting concerns about his availability. McDonald remarked on the situation:
"Pat Cummins hasn't been able to resume any type of bowling so he's heavily unlikely, so that would mean that we do need a captain." – Andrew McDonald
The Australian side, grouped with England, Afghanistan, and South Africa, will face England in their opening fixture on 22 February. The absence of Cummins, along with vice-captain Mitchell Marsh—sidelined by a back issue—leaves the team searching for leadership options. Travis Head, who has captaincy experience in only one T20 match, and seasoned leader Steve Smith are potential candidates. Smith is currently leading the team in Sri Lanka in Cummins' absence.
"They'll be the two that we look at for that leadership post." – Andrew McDonald
The squad's pace attack has also been hit by injuries. Josh Hazlewood's participation is doubtful due to calf and side issues, leaving Mitchell Starc and Nathan Ellis as the only fit quick bowlers. McDonald acknowledged the team's challenges:
"Patty is hugely unlikely, which is a bit of shame, and we've also got Josh Hazlewood, who is battling [to be fit] at the moment," – Andrew McDonald
As Australia prepares for the Champions Trophy, the team must resolve its leadership dilemma swiftly. The decision will likely depend on medical updates expected in the coming days.
"so that medical information will land over the next couple of days and we'll be able to shore that up and let everyone know the direction." – Andrew McDonald
