It recapped Australia’s historic win at the LPGA’s International Crown tournament. They defeated the American side in a thrilling final to claim gold. This victory is a game changer for Australia! It’s their first victory in the match-play tournament, where seven nations and a “rest of the world” squad compete in two pools.
Minjee Lee and Hannah Green were key players in making this win possible. Each of the duo’s athletes dominated in his or her singles match, both earning wins by a score of 2 and 1. Minjee Lee faced Angel Yin and showcased her skills by clinching the win, while Hannah Green overcame Yealimi Noh in a closely contested match. Green had sealed her victory at the 17th hole, a great individual moment in Australia’s overall triumph in the final.
Notably, the tournament format included both a semifinals and a final stage. During each of these rounds, teams played in one foursomes match (alternate shot) and two singles matches. Australia’s defensive work was tested to the fullest in their semifinal match. Kyriacou and Kim prevailed against Wei-Ling Hsu and Ko of the World team, taking victory on the 20th hole to earn their spot in the final. Japan’s Mao Saigo and Miyu Yamashita repeated their strong performance on the second day. They trounced Brooke Henderson and Wei-Ling Hsu 4 and 3 in their foursomes match.
The road to victory was not straightforward for Australia. In 2023, they contested Jeeno Thitikul and Thailand in the final TPC Harding Park, San Francisco. It was a disaster for them, a complete debacle in that game. This year, they returned in a big way. They moved on in the tournament as one of the top two countries from their pool.
Beyond their formidable on-course displays, the Aussie team showcased incredible mental fortitude and tactical savviness during the world-class competition. The semifinals and final matches required not only individual skill but teamwork and coordination among players. The combination of Lee’s and Green’s strong singles performances, alongside the crucial contributions from their teammates, highlighted Australia’s competitive spirit.
