The 2024 Masters golf tournament is set to take place from April 10-13 at Augusta National Golf Club, with Scottie Scheffler returning as the defending champion. Despite the extensive damage caused by Hurricane Helene throughout the Southeast, including Augusta, Georgia, the famed golf course has been restored to its pristine condition. The club faced minor damage but swiftly managed to repair the playing surfaces, ensuring there will be no noticeable difference for the upcoming tournament.
The hurricane had a profound impact on the Augusta community, leaving many residents displaced for several weeks. In response, Augusta National Golf Club demonstrated its commitment to the community by donating $5 million to the Hurricane Helene Community Crisis Fund. Fred Ridley, the club's chairman, commended the efforts of the organization in aiding recovery efforts and described the hurricane's devastation as significant for both the Southeast and Augusta.
"I think what I'm the most proud of is the response of our entire organization to that natural disaster, which is really what it was," – Fred Ridley
Hurricane Helene's force led to a reduction in tree numbers at Augusta National Golf Club. Although there are fewer trees than there were a year ago, Ridley assured that the course remains in excellent condition for the Masters.
"As far as the impact, the long-term impact, we have not quite as many trees as we did a year ago," – Fred Ridley
"As far as the golf course goes, it's in spectacular condition. I think we had minor damage to the course, the playing surfaces themselves, but we were able to get that back in shape, but I don't think you're going to see any difference in the condition for the Masters this year." – Fred Ridley
The club's quick recovery ensured that preparations for the 89th Masters could proceed without interruption. Despite the hurricane's challenges, Augusta National Golf Club stands ready to host one of golf's most prestigious tournaments in April 2024.
