Atlanta Drive GC prevailed in an electric showdown with New York Golf Club (NYGC). They came home with a rousing victory 6-5, with the deciding point coming on the last hole. Held this past Monday, the event was the first of the series with Atlanta jumping out to an early lead. The game featured many memorable moments including award-winning performances, notable appearances and dazzling displays of skill on the pitch.
Match Highlights
The competition started with NYGC showing their strength in the singles format. They jumped out to an early lead against Atlanta on the very first hole. Schauffele came up huge in a big moment. His initial attempt on Hole 7 came within just under five feet of the hole, putting New York up 1-0. NYGC never let up on their overall control of the game. On Hole 8, Young’s dart of an approach shot ended up only 15 inches from the hole, guaranteeing the team yet another point.
The tide quickly turned when Schauffele beat Thomas on Hole 10, stretching New York’s lead to 3-0. Atlanta showed their own resilience, gradually eating into New York’s lead in singles action. Though this was accomplished in the absence of Matt Fitzpatrick, Atlanta still did a good job of maintaining the suspense.
Turning Points
The tide turned in Atlanta’s favor during the triples portion of the match. Then at the worst possible moment New York finally broke, and Atlanta was ready to pounce. Fowler’s misfire into the bunker on Hole 14 gave Atlanta a chance to pounce. Schauffele’s mostly-stellar performance came unhinged just as Atlanta grabbed the lead for the first time.
Keegan-Michael Key, Ninja, and Matt Ryan from the upcoming show “The Unforkables,” were on hand to make it extra special. Their presence brought much-celebrated celebrity pizzazz to the event. Their presence was a strong signal of the rising popularity of golf and its power to engage a widely diverse audience.
Final Push and Victory
Atlanta’s persistence would reward them as they kept their head of steam all the way into stoppage time. Even with New York in control early on, Atlanta Drive GC were able to stay calm and collected. The match was neck-and-neck the whole way, with Atlanta needing to win on the final hole to secure victory—which they did!
