The Atlanta Drive Golf Club secured a commanding 9-3 victory over The Bay Golf Club in the TGL playoffs, earning them a coveted spot in the finals. The match took place on Monday, showcasing an impressive performance by Atlanta's star-studded trio of Justin Thomas, Billy Horschel, and Patrick Cantlay. The victory ensures a split of $9 million in prize money among the champions.
The playoff match shifted to singles play at the par-5 10th hole, where Justin Thomas capitalized on his fortunate circumstances to clinch the hole. His performance was instrumental in maintaining Atlanta's momentum throughout the match. Thomas expressed his satisfaction with the team's overall performance and anticipation for the upcoming finals.
"We all played really well tonight. We all contributed," said Justin Thomas.
The Bay Golf Club faced challenges as they were without Wyndham Clark, who was sidelined due to a neck injury that forced his withdrawal from last week's Players Championship, won by Rory McIlroy. The absence of Clark was felt, as The Bay's international team, comprising Irishman Shane Lowry, Australian Min Woo Lee, and Swede Ludvig Åberg, struggled against Atlanta's relentless trio.
Rory McIlroy, who provided guest commentary during the event on ESPN, remarked on the luck that played into Thomas's victory at the 10th hole.
"That is the luckiest bounce I've ever seen," commented McIlroy.
Looking ahead, Atlanta Drive GC is set to face the New York Golf Club, led by Xander Schauffele, in the inaugural best-of-three championship series scheduled for next Monday and Tuesday. The stage is set for an exciting conclusion to the TGL season as these two formidable teams vie for the championship title.
