Sri Lankan pace bowler, Asitha Fernando, returns to Glamorgan for a second spell. This is wonderful news coming just in time for the important home stretch of the County Championship! The 27-year-old cricketer will be on loan for the remainder of the season. His inclusion is a boost to the bowling attack as they aim for a promotion push in Division Two.
Fernando had already had a huge impact through his first spell with Glamorgan earlier this season. He went on to feature in all of his club’s first six Championship matches. During his time there, he proved his worth by claiming 17 wickets, serving as a valuable asset to the squad and its success. His leaving to join compatriots in Sri Lanka’s Test Series with Bangladesh was a telling change in the squad culture.
After completing his international duties, Fernando returned to domestic cricket with both feet. He was recently on the pitch for Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club in a T-20 match against Colombo CC. His time away has deepened his practice and advanced his assertiveness. After joining the rest of the Glamorgan squad for training in Cardiff on Monday, he was sounding ready for the challenges that await this week.
With the County Championship campaign entering its final stages, Fernando’s return could not have come at a better time. His track record of taking wickets and attacking the opposition batsmen is reason enough to invest in Glamorgan’s cricketing treasure. The squad is understandably delighted to have him focused on strengthening their squad for Tuesday’s important home game against Kent.
