Arsenal Women have confirmed defender Katie Reid has ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). She suffered the injury while in training. The 19-year-old USL player has been one of the most impactful USL players this season. She’s played in the opening six matches for Arsenal in the WSL, starting three. This cruel blow comes just months after Reid received her maiden call-up to the England senior squad in October.
The timing of the accident happened during a normal training activity and resulted in the quick retrieval of emergency medical attention. Reid’s condition was evaluated and she is due to have surgery in the next few days. That means she will be out for the rest of the 2025/26 season following the procedure. It’s going to be an incredibly challenging period for her and the team, but exciting as well.
Reid’s showings this season have lit up the pitch, proving her to be an emerging star and one of the Gunners’ go-to forces. Her qualitative contributions on the field served to further bolster her place in the squad. Her impending call-up to the national team was evidence of that speedy progress.
In their statement, the club reiterated their promise to continue supporting Reid as he heals from this tragic loss.
“Katie is being closely supported by our medical team at Sobha Realty Training Centre, and everyone at Arsenal looks forward to seeing her return to action as soon as possible.” – Arsenal
This injury is a big issue for Reid. Arsenal Women will have to figure out the rest of the season without one of their young golden girls. Her loss means the club’s front office and coaching staff may have to recalibrate their approach this offseason.
