Following an enthralling contest at the Estadio Jose Alvalade, Arsenal Women were crowned champions of Europe. They overcame the entire wealthy history of Barcelona 1-0, pulling off the biggest upset in their long and wealthy history. That’s how big this victory was, as a testament to the team’s amazing resilience. It highlights the incredible job done by their new head coach, Renee Slegers, as she had this success in her first year on the job.
Sweden’s Stina Blackstenius would go on to be the hero of the final. She slotted in the winning goal only seven minutes after coming off the bench to play! Scintillating movement and finishing. Her goal was beautifully assisted by fellow temporary last-minute recruit Beth Mead, showing the depth of England’s talent-rich squad. The victory capped an incredible run for Arsenal Women. They journeyed through 15 matches to win the coveted European trophy, including coming from first-leg deficits in three ties to do so, which was not exactly smooth sailing.
Renee Slegers’ impact has been evident all season. She pushed her team through to this monumental accomplishment after a dark period where many wrote her campaign off. In the three previous Women’s Super League (WSL) games leading up to that title decider, Arsenal Women had been battle-tested. They allowed a staggering 13 goals in, including thrashings to Aston Villa and Brighton. Yet, Slegers managed to refocus her players and develop a game plan that ultimately paid off on European football’s biggest stage.
The final really saw Leah Williamson and Kim Little dominate, both laying claim to career-defining displays. As the captain and only survivor from Arsenal’s first European title, Kim Little emphasized her belief in the team’s potential. It never seemed like our year, she confessed, looking back on the team’s story arc over the course of the season and their quest to be champions.
Renee Slegers had a fantastic match through the middle, collecting an astounding 80 touches on the evening. That’s two times the total of her teammate, Kim Little! This control in midfield proved crucial in stifling Barcelona’s attacking threats while setting the tone for Arsenal’s own offensive play. Williamson acknowledged the effectiveness of their tactical adjustments leading up to the final, saying, “We changed the game plan in the week and it paid off.”
Arsenal Women may have had issues in domestic competition, but they did not roll over. When the chips were down they showed incredible poise, tenacity and a will to win. The team’s transformation under Slegers has been remarkable, allowing them to reclaim their status as one of the most successful clubs in women’s football history. And with this most recent accolade, Arsenal Women further establish themselves as the most decorated women’s side in English football history.
The joyous celebration at the winner’s podium was the ultimate end to an inspiring journey of their hard work, time and effort. Each one played an integral role in the victory for the entire season. They underwent unbelievable pressure and scrutiny but came out winners on the night against one of Europe’s powerhouses. The Cup victory will do wonders for the young squad’s confidence. On almost everyone’s mind though, will be their continued pursuit of domestic and international glory.
Now Arsenal Women are enjoying their hard-won glory. As a result, they now face an exciting but daunting opportunity to improve on this success in future campaigns. As a team they have shown that they are more than able to overcome adversity and challenge with the world’s elite. Under the leadership of Renee Slegers, they have a very promising future ahead of them.
