Arsenal Faces Challenges as Premier League Title Race Intensifies

Arsenal's recent performance in the Premier League has raised concerns as they struggle to maintain their footing in the title race. The Gunners have dropped 12 points from winning positions this season, marking their highest tally in five years. This statistic is particularly concerning given that last season, Arsenal only relinquished nine points from winning positions, the second-lowest total in the league. Currently, Arsenal grapples with the absence of several key players, including William Saliba and Bukayo Saka, compounding their challenges on the pitch.

The club's efforts to bolster their squad are ongoing, with a focus on recruiting a forward by the end of the month. Arsenal failed to secure an out-and-out striker during the summer transfer window, leaving manager Mikel Arteta to acknowledge the disparity in bench options compared to their rivals. Arteta expressed his frustrations, noting,

"When you look at the performances, I don't know how many teams are playing at this level in the league. But when you look at the bench, you would probably say we are very short." – Mikel Arteta

Arsenal's defensive resilience has been a hallmark under Arteta's leadership. However, issues persist in their attack, where opportunities continue to be squandered. The Gunners' struggle to convert chances and maintain leads has given rise to a perception of a team faltering in the Premier League title chase. Meanwhile, Liverpool have capitalized on winning positions, securing 17 points and establishing a six-point lead over Arsenal. Liverpool's depth was evident in their recent victory over Brentford, where substitutes such as Nunez and Andrew Robertson contributed to a 2-0 injury-time win. Arteta highlighted this contrast, stating,

"There are moments, and obviously they (Liverpool) managed to do that (win). They made the subs, and the subs made the impact and changed the game." – Mikel Arteta

During Arsenal's recent match against Aston Villa, Arteta made only one substitution, bringing on Raheem Sterling for Gabriel Martinelli with eight minutes remaining. This limited maneuvering starkly contrasts Liverpool's ability to refresh their squad effectively. Arteta acknowledged the challenges posed by his squad depth,

"Yes, for sure, especially with the numbers that we have in the squad, and looking at our bench." – Mikel Arteta

Despite these hurdles, Arsenal remains active in the transfer market. The club is closing in on a deal for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, although he will remain with his current club for the rest of the season. Additionally, Arsenal has been linked with a potential January move for Benjamin Sesko, their primary striker target last summer. However, Sesko's agent has indicated that he will remain at RB Leipzig during this window.

The Gunners' challenges are further exacerbated by injuries to key players such as Gabriel Jesus and Ben White. These absences have forced Arsenal to rely on less experienced players and limited tactical adjustments during matches. Arteta expressed pride in his team's efforts but emphasized the need for improvement,

"I am incredibly proud of this team. It was an immense performance. But I am very disappointed because defending the way we did for the second goal cannot be a part of our game if we want to be at the highest level in this country. It was nowhere near the standard required." – Mikel Arteta
