Archie Vaughan Signs New Deal with Somerset Until 2028

Archie Vaughan, the promising 19-year-old cricketer and son of former England captain Michael Vaughan, has signed a new contract with Somerset that will keep him at the club until the end of the 2028 season. In 2024 Vaughan made his debut for Somerset’s first team. After a few games, he had really set himself as a key player to the team. His commitment to the club is a mark of Somerset’s personal ambition and faith in his abilities.

As a cricketer, Vaughan’s rapid ascent in the international game was highlighted by a string of positive milestones. Just in January, he was in charge of the England Under-19 team on their tour of South Africa. His leadership storytelling stood out even then at such a young age. In August, he stole national headlines playing a magnificent innings of 409 not out against Northamptonshire in the One-Day Cup. His innings of 109 not out was a career-best score and his first three-figure innings for Somerset.

Ever since Vaughan joined Somerset’s academy back in 2020, he’s shown how versatile a player he is. Although he is mainly considered a batter, his spin bowling has caught the attention of fans and selectors. Subsequently, in 2024, he took centre stage with extremely eyecatching match figures of 11-140 against Surrey at Taunton. Yet again, his phenomenal achievement was key to Somerset defeating their rivals once more.

So far, Vaughan has incredible List A and first-class match stats. He has churned out 1,094 runs at 37.90 with a strike rate of 140.62 in his 35 games and picked up 40 wickets. His performances have laid down a marker, ensuring his place in the team going forward. They’ve helped him gain notoriety as one of the club’s top rising stars.

The new contract signifies a vote of confidence from Somerset management in Vaughan’s potential to contribute to the team’s success over the next several years. Vaughn continues to hone his craft and iterate upon his first big wins. He has his eyes set on proving an influential figure on Somerset’s pursuit to success across all formats in 2024 and beyond.

“I’m really excited and it means a lot to know that the club have confidence in me.”

He added,

“I hope I can reward their faith with winning performances on the field. I just want to keep doing what I’m doing, learning and improving all the time and hopefully taking my game to the next level.”

The new contract signifies a vote of confidence from Somerset management in Vaughan’s potential to contribute to the team’s success over the next several years. As he continues to develop his skills and build on his early successes, Vaughn aims to play an integral role in Somerset’s pursuit of victory in upcoming competitions.
