Antonio Brown Detained Following Altercation at Miami Boxing Event

Earlier Saturday morning, police had briefly detained ex-NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown. The shooting took place soon after a fistfight broke out at a celebrity boxing match in Miami. At approximately 3 a.m., law enforcement arrived based on notifications from ShotSpotter, a gunshot-detection system. It’s not clear if gunshots had been fired during the incident.

A disturbing viral video on social media depicts Brown engaging in a physical altercation with a group of black women at the event. This year’s event was staged by mega-popular streamer Adin Ross. Eyewitness accounts indicated that Brown was chasing after a victim while brandishing a black firearm. After the fight, Brown was removed from the building with his hands cuffed behind his back by law enforcement.

In statement to the Chicago Tribune, Officer Kiara Delva said that police interviewed several people at the scene but made no arrests. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

In a statement posted on social media, Brown claimed he had been “jumped by multiple individuals who tried to steal my jewelry and cause physical harm to me.” He emphasized that he was not arrested, stating, “Police temporarily detained me until they received my side of the story and then released me. I WENT HOME THAT NIGHT AND WAS NOT ARRESTED.”

Antonio Brown, 36, was one of the NFL’s biggest stars during his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2010 through 2018. He developed into one of the league’s best receiving threats during his time with the Steelers. He took over the NFL by leading the league in receiving yards – not once, but twice. His tenure in Pittsburgh was highly successful. Then, he finished an impressive career, spending his last three seasons with the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He retired out of a local boyhood dream. As he departed the field during the Buccaneers’ 2021 regular-season finale vs. the New York Jets, he removed his jersey, shoulder pads, and gloves.

That incident was just the latest chapter in Brown’s storied, disastrous saga. He retired from professional football soon after leaving the Buccaneers. Authorities have continued to investigate the altercation. What’s interesting, and what a lot of folks are asking now, is how this will affect Brown’s future pursuits beyond the game.
