Anthony Richardson Embraces Competition and Growth as Colts Quarterback

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson returned to the team’s complex! This will be his first trip since he endured a traumatic shoulder injury last year. This go round, Richardson finds himself in a different situation. He’s getting ready for a highly competitive training camp and hoping to prove he belongs on the opening day roster. The Colts have been given positive reads on his progress this offseason. This indicates that he is preparing the ground for a deadlier return.

Richardson was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. It was a tough intro to his first offseason as a pro athlete. After a season-ending shoulder injury in mid-October 2023 rehabilitated his big league aspirations, he paid obsessive attention to his average number of pass attempts per game. This rehabilitation assisted him in rebuilding the strength in his throwing shoulder. On top of that, he spent a lot of time working on his footwork and keeping calm in the pocket.

Now, as Richardson approaches his first NFL season, he’s set to share the field with veteran signal caller Daniel Jones in an unclear position battle. Excited for the competition, Richardson said he looked forward to learning from Jones, an NFL veteran with 17 years’ experience.

“I’m looking forward to learning a lot from him,” said Richardson.

To him, simply driving each other to compete and get better will make life easier on both players while improving their individual game.

“Competition, that brings the best out of you and that’s just how life works,” he noted.

During the entire offseason, Richardson worked on his craft with trainers in Florida. He tried to put more energy into staying balanced and consistent through his throw. He knew that despite the fact he can make every throw imaginable with a clean pocket, success while playing off-platform would be necessary.

“You’ve got to compete and just get better because somebody else to the right, left or even in front of you is trying to outwork you and be better than you,” he added.

Colts head coach Shane Steichen preaches consistency, too. The M action will be important for determining who wins the starting QB job, which Harding is very clear about. Fans and analysts alike would like to see how Richardson applies what he has learned on the field in training.

“That was really one of the main things I wanted to focus on because everybody knows I can throw the ball whenever [the pocket] is smooth,” Richardson explained. “But I want to find opportunities for myself to be consistent when I am off-balance, make decent throws, and even when everything is perfect, making sure my feet are intact and my base is solid.”

As Richardson takes the practice field, his every move will be scrutinized. The entire football world will be watching to see how he translates all of that work into performance during training camp. With that chip on his shoulder, Richardson is now focused on making himself a fixture in the league. Under the influence of seasoned figures such as Jones, he has a goal of establishing himself as a trustworthy linchpin for the Colts.

As Richardson steps onto the practice field, all eyes will be on him and his ability to translate his offseason work into performance during training camp. With a newfound determination and the guidance of experienced teammates like Jones, Richardson aims not only to secure his position but also to prove that he can be a reliable leader for the Colts.
