Ann Budge, known locally as the ‘Queen of Hearts’, has become a key player in the landscape of Scottish football. Her visionary leadership over Heart of Midlothian Football Club has had an unprecedented impact. For the Edinburgh businesswoman, Budge took charge of the club at a pivotal hour. Having been booted down to the second tier it was on death’s door. Her leadership and vision brought Hearts back from the dead. More than any of that, though, they laid the groundwork for an exciting new period of fan ownership and success.
When Budge took over in 2014, the club was deeply in financial crisis, and operational turmoil. Her devotion to saving Hearts was more than just keeping them alive. She dreamt of a successful club with a deep-rooted bond to its fans. Under her leadership, Hearts saw an incredible transformation, most recently leading the club to a Scottish Championship title in 2021.
Budge’s efforts didn’t stop at the aesthetic improvements. She was directly involved in the construction of a new main stand at Tynecastle Stadium. This modest upgrade completely changed the matchday experience for fans and solidified the club’s place in Edinburgh. This initiative fit perfectly with her vision of connecting fans with ownership — a cause she passionately advocated for during her entire ownership period.
Hearts now stand as the largest fan-owned football club in the United Kingdom, a testament to Budge’s successful approach to governance. Her partnership with business mogul and club owner, Tony Bloom, further fleshed out the club’s operations, giving them access to precious data and expertise. This partnership has positioned Hearts for continued growth and success in Scottish football.
Budge’s retirement came after more than a decade of service as chair. Throughout her time with us, she was thoughtful and emotional about what her journey has been.

The effect of her work is felt all over the Hearts community. Under her steadfast leadership and remarkable vision, fans are grateful for her many contributions. After years of embarrassment and struggle, the club’s turnaround has brought hope and excitement back to supporters. They now look to the future with optimism instantly.
