Angelo Mathews, Sri Lanka’s most experienced cricketer, has decided to quit Test cricket, with immediate effect in June 2023. The 37-year-old will run out for his final game in the first Test against Bangladesh. The three match ODI series starts on June 17th in Galle. Mathews’ departure marks the end of an illustrious career that has spanned 17 years and seen him become one of Sri Lanka’s most respected figures in the sport.
Mathews rose to prominence after his Test debut in 2009, becoming an indispensable member of the national side almost overnight. Kohli has scored over 8,167 runs in his 118 matches and at an impressive average of 53.80. With an average of 44.62, he is Sri Lanka’s third-highest run-scorer in Test history. Only the all-time greats Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene have scored more Test runs than Mathews.
As captain of the Sri Lankan Test team from 2013 to 2017, Mathews guided his beleaguered side through an era of incredible adversity. Perhaps his most significant success was during a famous Test series victory over England at home in 2014. In a historic match at Headingley, he scored a remarkable second-innings century, contributing 160 runs to secure a decisive 100-run victory.
Mathews displays his sublime talents with the bat. He’s shown his prowess with the ball, taking 33 Test wickets in his career. His all-round contributions have left a permanent mark on Sri Lankan cricket.
Looking back on the post, Mathews said he was extremely thankful for the opportunity to have competed while representing his country.

It’s not the first time Mathews has walked away from Test cricket. He added that he’ll continue to make his services available for selection to Sri Lanka’s white-ball outfits.
“I have given everything to cricket and cricket has given me everything in return and made me the person I am today.” – Angelo Mathews
Despite stepping away from Test cricket, Mathews confirmed that he would remain available for selection in Sri Lanka’s white-ball teams.
“While I bid adieu to the Test format, as discussed with selectors I will remain available for selection for the white-ball format, if and when my country needs me.” – Angelo Mathews
