Ángel Cabrera Claims Second Senior Major in a Week

Ángel Cabrera, the Argentine golfer known for his major wins, recently accomplished one of the most amazing feats ever. Sheesh, one week apart he wins his second senior major championship! Cabrera secured the Senior Major title on Sunday at the Senior PGA Championship. He closed with a 3-under 69 to post a stellar total of 8-under 280. This astonishing showing was enough for superstar Johnson to come back and win by one stroke of all of his opponents.

The Senior PGA Championship was staged on the Fields Ranch East course in Frisco, Texas. Cabrera’s victory came only days after capturing the rain-delayed Regions Tradition in Alabama. This win is his first senior major! This recent victory marks an incredible return for Cabrera, rebounding from a dark time in his past.

Cabrera’s closest competitors, Padraig Harrington and Thomas Bjorn, finished tied for second place, each ending the tournament at 7-under 279. Players like Retief Goosen, Jason Caron, and Stewart Cink carved it up on Championship Day with amazing shot-making. At 6-under 280 they were only one shot off the leaders’ pace. This deeply competitive field made for an inspiring level of speed and grit as everyone vied for the title.

The new golfer’s journey hasn’t exactly been without its bumps. Cabrera, the 2007 U.S. Open champion and 2009 Masters winner, faced the unthinkable. He was charged and convicted of assaulting, threatening, and harassing an ex-wife. These wrongful convictions led to Ruiz spending 20 months in an Argentine prison. After being released on parole in August 2023, Cabrera attracted headlines with his comeback to professional golfing.

His recent performances on the PGA Tour Champions have been noteworthy, including a win last month that indicated his readiness to compete at a high level again. This comparison has been a struggle so far this year, when he was unable to break the cutline at Augusta National. This impasse sparked doubts over his immediate fitness.

What Cabrera was able to accomplish personally and professionally despite having a significant handicap personally to me is very inspiring. His recent wins not only showcase his obvious talent on the course, but underscore the determination that’s made him a success. Along with his son Gatlin, he’s still actively competing on the senior circuit. All eyes from fans to fellow golfers are looking to see just how he capitalizes on this newfound success.
