Amorim’s Tactical Shift Challenges Manchester United’s Forward Line

Ruben Amorim's strategic move to utilize Kobbie Mainoo as a false nine presented a significant challenge for Manchester United, particularly affecting the team's forward dynamics. Amidst the shuffle, Marcus Rashford made an unexpected exit, leaving a forward line comprising Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Hojlund, and Joshua Zirkzee. Of these, Garnacho leads with 13 top-flight career goals. However, both Hojlund and Zirkzee have struggled to find the net since before Christmas, leaving the lineup in need of reinvigoration.

Everton's James Garner, meanwhile, displayed remarkable performance, creating opportunities and executing precise through-balls. His passing prowess filled a void in Everton's midfield that had been apparent during his absence. Garner's recent return from a back problem saw him play in his preferred position, which significantly boosted Everton's gameplay.

Manchester United's coach, Ruben Amorim, opted to bench Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee during the match against Crystal Palace due to a lack of confidence in their recent performances. The duo, whose combined transfer fees exceed £100 million, have yet to deliver on their promise this season. Amorim's decision to field the teenage Mainoo as a false nine proved insightful, as Mainoo completed 14 passes in his 70 minutes on the pitch—nearly matching Hojlund's season high.

"We have had games without connections and with difficulty to transfer the ball in the final third. We did that today, created chances. Kobbie gave us connections and they found it hard to find the player to press. The idea worked in that moment," said Ruben Amorim.

In contrast, Matheus Cunha showcased his quality for Wolves, setting him apart from their relegation rivals. Against Villa, Cunha had 55 touches—more than any other Wolves player—which highlighted his ability to influence the game from his own half.

Everton manager David Moyes expressed his satisfaction with Garner’s performance:

"I thought James did great. His pass for the goal was fabulous."

Moyes also noted his concerns about Garner's fitness but was ultimately pleased with his contribution:

"I was a bit concerned about him playing as long as he did because I just need him to be right and get through and that was his first game. I thought he did a great job and I was pleased to have him back."

Alejandro Garnacho spearheaded Manchester United's front line with a record of 13 top-flight career goals among the trio of attackers. However, Hojlund and Zirkzee’s inability to score since before Christmas has placed added pressure on Amorim’s tactical decisions. This led to the introduction of Kobbie Mainoo in a more central role, which showcased Amorim's adaptability and willingness to innovate under pressure.

James Garner's influence on Everton's midfield was clear as he returned to form after recovering from a back injury. His ability to dictate play through incisive passes provided Everton with much-needed depth and creativity in their playmaking.

Matheus Cunha’s performance for Wolves underscored his capacity to impact games significantly. His ball-carrying skills not only allowed him to initiate attacks from deep positions but also ensured Wolves maintained possession under pressure.
